Small retail is growing with a double-digit growth rate, from food and beverages the 25% of the turnover.
The turnover of small retail seems to be increasing in the last year, and in fact at a pace equal to or even greater than that of supermarkets, according to data from Intale’s market overview for March, based on the transactions that have taken place between April 2023 and March 2024 in more than 1,000 kiosks and mini markets that use the Intale Point management application.

In the last twelve months, the total number of stores using Intale Point recorded a turnover of 607 million euros, with the increase in the turnover of the stores belonging to a fixed sample amounting to +10.2% compared to the immediately preceding twelve months. The number of transactions carried out through Intale’s system exceeded 90 million, while the average basket reached 6.85 euros, with stores belonging to the constant sample recording a 6.4% increase in average basket value. The day of the week that records the most transactions is consistently Sunday, with 287 transactions per store (which makes sense, since on Sundays there is usually no "competition" from supermarkets that are closed), but Saturday is the day that records the largest average basket, worth 7.04 euros.
Rapid growth for food and beverages
As for the individual categories, although tobacco has the biggest share, representing almost 65% of sales, there is strong growth in the categories of beverages (+14.6%) and food (+12.8%), which are collectively responsible for 25% of the total turnover of small retail. One subcategory of particular interest is energy drinks, which, according to Intale, grew turnover by 22.4% last year, the number of transactions by 22.7%, and now accounts for 23.5% of the soft drinks category’s turnover.
