Greek Products seeking for Brand Recognition from EU
Applications for brand recognition of nine Greek products as PDO (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) or TSG (traditional specialty guaranteed) are on a pending status with the European Commission, according to data from the Community’s Database on Agricultural Products DOOR (PDO/PGI).

The most recent application filed on July 23, 2019, and it is even more unique as a case since it will be the first to provide recognition to a Greek product as TSG. This refers to the “Clarissio Peach”, whose recognition has been requested and officially filed by the local Association of Velvento Producers.
A month earlier, on June 28, the request for the brand recognition of “Fava Amorgos” as a PGI product had been lodged, while applications for the recognition of “Katavias Rhodes Bean” as PGI, of “Fava Santorini” as PDO, and Katavia of Rhodes PDO were pending. .
Since January 2018, a request has been made to recognize “Krasotiri Kos – Cheese” of Pozia as PGI, while from 2017 applications are pending for “Naxos Male” (PDO) and “Kritsa Olive Oil”.
The total number of Greek products already recognized by the European Commission as PDO or PGI reached 107. The most recent product recognized was “Artichoke Irion” (PGI) in September 2018, while in 2017 “Melekouni” (PGI) was registered, also “Pefkotimaromelo Crete” (PDO), in 2016 “Fava Feneou” (PGI), and “Raisins Sultanina Crete” (PGI).
Most of the recognized Greek products are in the category of fruits, vegetables and cereals (45), oils and fats (30) and cheeses (21), while two products belong to the meat (lamb and goat Elassona PDO) and one in the fish (“fish roe of Messolonghi” as PDO)
