Legally binding quantitative targets for reducing food waste in the EU.

Friday, September 8, 2023

In order to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030 in Europe, it was deemed necessary to establish legally binding quantitative targets by the European Commission. Achieving this goal requires rallying all European countries towards this common goal.

For one more year, ADUS supports the great work of the non-profit organization "Boroume". We stand by the organization in its every initiative!

It is therefore important to know that the European Commission is now proposing the establishment of legally binding quantitative targets for reducing food waste in the European Union to accelerate the progress of the EU’s contribution towards achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 (50% reduction by 2030).

Especially, as far as the context of the new revision of the EU legislation for waste is concerned, the Commission proposes the establishment of a legal obligation for all EU member states. They are required to take all necessary measures to reduce food waste by 2030:

  • by 10% in the food processing & processing stage compared to 2020 levels,
  • by 30% (per capita), cumulatively at stages of retail and consumption (focus, households) compared to 2020 levels.

The Commission’s proposal will be examined – through the ordinary legislative procedure – by the European Parliament and the Council.

It is being noted in this regard that the national levels of food waste in 2020, according to the official data submitted by the competent Greek authorities and published by Eurostat, total >2 million tons and are distributed as follows among the individual stages of the food value chain:

The primary level of production: 372.204,348

Processing: 375.158,060

Retail and food distribution: 150.471,860

Restaurants and other focus services: 220.032,001

Households : 930.322,652
